Code Of Conduct

The School’s Code of Conduct focuses on developing pupils as young citizens of the future by highlighting rights and responsibilities and the importance of respecting others and the environment. To emphasise this, the code is entitled ‘Learners’ Charter’. Details are noted below.


As a learner in James Hamilton Academy, I am responsible for participating in school life in a way which embodies the core values of our learning community.

Respect

  • I will respect my teacher’s professional opinion and judgement and respond appropriately.
  • I will work to the best of my ability in class.
  • I will complete homework to the best of my ability and meet class deadlines.
  • I will seek out opportunities to achieve both within and outwith the classroom.
  • I will act in a way that safeguards the health and safety of all members of the school community.

Fairness

  • I will adhere to the agreed school Dress Code.
  • I will bring the appropriate materials to school for each lesson.
  • I will arrive at class on time to ensure that the lesson is not disrupted.

Compassion

  • I will listen to others and respect their opinions.
  • I will consider the impact of what I say and do on members of the school community.

Trust

  • I will bring my Homework Diary each day and log my homework.
  • I will organise and plan my study timetable in preparation for assessments.
  • I will seek advice about my progress or general welfare from staff.
  • I will manage my behaviour in class and around the school in a way which reinforces the four school values.

As a learner in James Hamilton Academy, I am entitled to be treated in a way which embodies the core values of our learning community.

Respect

  • I will be informed of what I am learning and why.
  • I will be encouraged to discuss my learning with other learners within classroom guidelines.

Fairness

  • I will be able to discuss learning with my teacher.
  • I will have support or help to overcome my difficulties in learning.
  • I will have opportunities to use a range of resources including ICT.
  • I will be assessed on my progress.
  • I will have opportunities to discuss my progress in assessments with my teacher.
  • I will have opportunities to develop as a successful learner, effective contributor, confident individual and reponsible citizen.

Compassion

  • I will be listened to and my feelings will be taken into consideration.

Trust

  • I will experience a variety of ways of learning and developing new skills.
  • I will collaborate with other learners in the completion of some tasks as directed by the teacher.

Certain things are strictly forbidden in and around the school:-

  • No form of bullying will be tolerated in James Hamilton Academy.
  • There is no smoking or gambling allowed in or around the school.
  • No food or drink may be removed from the dining hall or consumed in the corridors, classrooms or library.
  • No graffiti is allowed on school books, jotters, folders, etc or on any school property
  • Pupils may not use the Admin corridor on the ground floor of the Main Building except when sent by a member of staff.
  • Pupils are not allowed in the school before Registration or at 8.50 a.m., intervals or lunchtimes, except for specified areas in bad weather or to access the toilets

A School Code of Conduct is necessary for the smooth running of the school and for everybody’s safety. All organisations have rules whether for employees or pupils. We would ask you, the parents / carers, to encourage your child to adhere to the Learner’s Charter which exists for their safety and well-being.
